Internal Document Shows Reliance on Gimmicks, One Time Fixes to Address Budget Deficit
Senate Republicans are attempting to replay that last four years when the legislature and Governor Tom Corbett relied on gimmicks and one time fixes which led to the current $1.2 billion budget deficit. The Morning Call’s Capitol Ideas Blog reported last night that an internal document showed a number of “ideas” to balance the budget.
On the list would be reducing the scheduled increase to the state’s pension contribution, withholding payments to the Department of Human Services and school districts’ Social Security payments, and other ploys that do nothing to fix the budgetary problems Pennsylvania faces.
“Instead of offering real solutions to balance the budget and fund public schools in Pennsylvania, the Senate Republicans are relying on the same failed gimmicks that created the budget mess in the first place,” Rebuild Pennsylvania Spokesman Mike Mikus said. “It’s time for House and Senate Republicans to get serious about the budget and education funding so that we can build a stronger future for Pennsylvania.”
